Read 📖📄: The Consequences of Caring by Bill Simmons
I read this 2012 Bill Simmons column over the holiday break and have been waiting for the right time to share it. I’m feeling extra good about basketball at the moment: I just got home from my first-ever Knicks Game at MSG (shout-out AE) and the Lakers had a pretty good weekend.
Rather than gloat, I’ll recommend this banger from Bill when he, in his own words, “could still use his fingers.” It’s about basketball, family, fandom, pain, and LeBron James absolutely ripping the faces off the Boston Celtics in the playoffs. For those of you Basketball fans who are little too young or simply didn’t read much Grantland back then (like me!), it’s a real treat. For those of you who did, or who just enjoy great writing, you’re welcome.
Listen 🎧🎼: Steph Ango on Dialectic
Steph Ango is one of the most underrated people on the internet, in my opinion. He’s the CEO of Obsidian, the tool I use to write, think, and store my ideas. But he contains multitudes: he’s a multi-hyphenate creative and designer who has worked across mediums: hardware and software, furniture and industrial design, supply chain and packaging, media, instruments, and more. He is a toolmaker first and foremost and we talk about creative constraints and tools enable us to stoke the flame inside us.
Steph is also one of my favorite writers and his ideas challenge and expand my thinking. I am thrilled with how the conversation came out. I believe these ideas will challenge you in unexpected ways and push you to be more creative, agentic, and optimistic.
Listen 🎧🎼: Doechii: Tiny Desk Concert
If you’ve read this newsletter for a while, you know I love NPR’s Tiny Desk. In honor of her Best Rap Album Grammy win and performance, here’s one of my favorite recent episodes. Boom bap.
Also, go watch this one minute video from Doechii, five years ago, after she was fired from her job (h/t E):
“I’ve got nothing to lose.”
Thanks for reading,
Jackson
